REUNION NEWS
Hi to everyone:
Approximately 20 folks got together in London the weekend of June 9th, and had a great time, I also had the chance to run some things by those that were there to get a feel for the reunion in September and thought I would let all know the status and provide a list of those that indicated they were coming and those that are undecided or unable to commit at this time. We all know that things happen that cannot be foreseen however, due to the ordering of the food by myself and the restaurant please keep this in mind should you have to cancel less than a week before September 14th. If I have missed someone that should be on the list, I apologize and also if I assumed you were coming and you cannot, let me know.
So here it goes:
I checked out some motels in Southampton, which will be the base town for the event and as I mentioned, the motels are clean and convenient, have all the amenities but not fancy. The one offering the best deal is the Manor Motel , 183 Palmerston Street, Southampton which has 19 rooms, which the costs of $70.00 for single, or $75.00 for double. They have full bath, a/c, WiFi, coffee maker, and a small fridge, on ground floor, with a small courtyard. It is close to downtown, with a Tim Hortons five minute walk away. Liquor store is close (walking distance) and there is a beer store about five minute drive away. There are restaurants and two hotels five minute walk away, and a pharmacy. I will be providing a map of the area with the above-mentioned highlighted. The telephone number for the Manor Motel is 519-797-2216, and please mention that you are with the Greenfield Park group when you make your reservations. If anyone wishes to bring campers or trailers they may camp at our place, just let us know.
On Friday when you arrive, and after your check-in, we will be having a bar-b-que at our farm, which is 6 kms away. Since everyone will be tired from travelling I thought that we would just sit around the bonfire and chat and talk about old times. I will be making a list of items for those to bring to help out with the meal, but will be confining that to those who are relatively close by as foods do not travel well in summer, and we certainly do not need a huge quality as I will be supplying the corn on the cob. The menu will be bar-b-que steak,( small charge for steak and we will have three bar-b-ques available), corn on the cob and salads, with rolls and dessert. For the dessert I thought that we could have something like square or cookies even so as not be be too messy. I was thinking that a few bags of munchies would be ok and that will cover Friday and Saturday night. Please bring your liquid refreshments and a lawn chair.
Saturday morning you are on your own and about 12 noon we will meet at Pioneer Park for lunch. I thought that I could pre-order pizza, (small charge and I will order and pick it up) again you provide your own drinks. Pioneer Park is a really nice park, right on the water, you can dip your feet in Lake Huron, it has plenty of picnic tables and has a great shaded area and a sunny shady beach. It is also adjacent to the wharf where you can watch the boats and fishing tugs leave the harbour.
Saturday night I have arranged for one of the restaurants in Port Elgin to close from 5:00 to 7:00 so we can have supper there. It is a nice english pub (The Blind Badger) and because they are closing to the public, they quoted $25.00 plus tax per person. The food is very good and I know that the establishment will go out of their way for us. The menu will be coming and we may be able to pre-order to save time.
Saturday after dinner it is back to our farm and we will be going on a hayride (pulled by tractor, sorry, not my horses) and another bonfire. Sunday we will go to a restaurant in Southampton for brunch, I am still negotiating for this, but it may be at the Walker House, 5 minute walk from the motel.
I have tried to keep costs to a minimum as we are all in that age group of pensioners, and some travel a great distance to attend and it is appreciated. The Friday night bar-b-que should be in the vicinity of $5.00 person, the Saturday lunch pizza probably about the same, as mentioned, Saturday night dinner $25.00 plus tax, and the Sunday brunch to be determined.
There is golf available for those that wish to play and if you do, please let me know and I will provide you with the names and numbers of the courses. There are three large courses, one smaller one and a par three course. For other activities please check out the websitewww.sunsets.comécommunityphpÉpage=southampton. There are a number of quaint little stores, very unique finds. If you require a WalMart, we have a Supercentre in Port Elgin, 20 minute drive away, basically there is available anything you could possibly need.
I would ask that if I have missed someone or have the incorrect e-mail address to please let me know, in the meantime, spread the word and feel free to give folks my e-mail address. I am sending this on to Norman Simard and Bob Hawkins in anticipation of the both of them getting the word out, it also would be nice if they could attend.
I can`t think of anything else, I did want to get this information out asap and apologize for the delay , but Larry and I are looking forward to the get together and showing you all how country boys and girls have fun, or as Alan jackson says, Country boys and girls getting down on the farm.
