Latest jobs report reveals more troubling news for Canada’s job market
When it comes to job creation, the Conservatives have completely lost their way. Statistics Canada’s most recent report revealed that 9,400 net jobs were lost in June alone—and unemployment continues to rise.“Our job market has reached a new low since the 2010 economic recovery,” said Official Opposition Finance critic Nathan Cullen (Skeena—Bulkley Valley). “Almost 50,000 youth jobs disappeared and 50,000 young people simply gave up on finding work altogether.”
The latest numbers show that 21,000 private-sector jobs were lost in June, along with 11,900 public-sector positions. An additional 300,000 Canadians will be out of work moving forward, pushing nation-wide unemployment to 1.4 million people.
“Contrary to Conservative rhetoric, their laissez-faire approach has meant the US is now surpassing Canada on job creation,” added Cullen. “Stephen Harper and his Conservative government have stood idly by while Canadian factories close their doors and workers lose their jobs and their means to feed their families. It is long past time these Conservatives changed direction.”
