Speech by Toronto’s top cop cancelled for lack of interest
Toronto Police Chief Bob Blair is not popular in some quarters. That's no surprise. Occupy and G-20 protesters are probably not fans.
But it's startling to discover that members of Toronto's elite aren't particularly interested in him either.
Toronto's century-old Empire Club, one of Canada's most prestigious speaking venues, cancelled a speech this week by Blair, apparently for lack of interest.
The Empire Club told the National Post fewer than 50 people had signed up to hear the Thursday luncheon address by Blair on the topic "Policing: Adapting to a Changing World."
Empire Club president Verity Craig wouldn't comment on the decision to cancel the speech.
"I'm not going to address or make a comment one way or the other," Craig told the Post. "I respect the chief of police and I would never discuss why we cancelled or they cancelled an event."
The web site Torontoist said its inquiry to the Empire Club revealed Blair cancelled the speech and gave no reason for doing so.
The Empire Club's guest speakers generally draw a good crowd. More than 200 turned up for Toronto Mayor Rob Ford earlier this year and Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney's speech next month is sold out, with more than a thousand people expected.
Former Toronto mayor David Miller may know how Blair feels. Last year, the lame duck mayor was scheduled to speak to the Canadian Club, but only 19 people bought tickets, according to Toronto Life's Informer blog.
It can't be the venue, can it? Both Miller and Blair were to speak at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel, a Toronto landmark.
Sometimes speeches get cancelled if you're too popular ... with people who hate you.
Last year, the University of Ottawa scrapped a planned appearance by American right-wing commentator Ann Coulter following what the Globe and Mail termed "boisterous demonstrations outside that sponsors of the appearance feared could turn violent."
Canadian conservative pundit Ezra Levant, who organized the event, said demonstrators swarmed the venue, making it "a situation the security and police advised was untenable for safety reasons."
It is one thing to be an asshole, it's another thing to be disrespected but..... for News Agencies not to know your name..... well that just proves you are a piece of garbage..... the chiefs name is Bill Blair.... not Bob Blair..... Bill is the piece of shit that caused all the rioting during the G20..... and the false arrests
