So, its finally over and the Liberals have a majority. Pundits everywhere are giving the public their opinion on what happened and why they were so wrong in the weeks leading up to election day.
Pundits keep saying Andrea Horwath made a mistake in judgment when she decided to force an election. The truth is NO she didn't make a mistake, at least not at the time she made her decision not to support the Liberal/NDP budget.
How was Andrea to know that Tim Hudak was about to commit political suicide by taking progressive out of the PC party and turning them into clones of the Harper regime.
The people of Ontario, and those outside of Alberta, have had enough of Harpers style of Tea Party politics and the oppression of the middle class but it wasn't just Harper economics that did Hudak in, it was the ghost of Harris and Tim Hudak's own failure to have his finger on the pulse of the Ontario voter.
The people of Ontario want the deficit reduced but not at the expense of 100,000 jobs which Tim Hudak failed to adequately explain to them how he would achieve that number.
And his "million jobs plan" just did not add up. Then there is the decades old public dislike of Tim Hudak.
And what can I say about the power of the unions, Harper take note, who told their members to vote their conscience and to cast it for the party most likely to beat a PC candidate.
As for Kathleen Wynne, the public did not see her as the principal player in the gas plant fiasco nor the Ornge mismanagement affair and felt that she was the best alternative to four years of PC austerity and the one most likely to put Ontario back on track to prosperity.
The only true loser here was Tim Hudak while Andrea Horwath didn't win she and the NDP did gain seats.
Now that Hudak has stepped down as leader of the PC Party pundits and vultures are circling and speculating as to who will replace him. Two names being tossed around are Tony Clement and Lisa Raitt.
I can't see that happening, neither one of the two mentioned are Jim Prentice and this is not the Conservative party of Alberta where JP is a proper fit, this is the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario and the members should not forget that fact. Both TC and LR are followers of the Harper doctrine and neither have shown leadership ability. TC carries the stigma of the G8 and the "Gazebo Affair" and LR just does not inspire confidence as a leader due to her inactivity on Lac Megantic and the wheat transportation fiasco.
Then there are those in the PC Party who still have a sour taste in their mouth about how far to the right Tim Hudak took them and how it was instrumental in their defeat. But I could be wrong since there a factions within the party that decided to give TH a second chance after his previous failure to lead the party to victory.
If they truly want to restore the "Progressive" Conservative brand they will have to make a move toward more coffee and less tea.
