All I can say is that these idiots would rather sacrifice millions in wheat so that they can put the stamp of Conservative incompetence on a crisis
CN offered to solve looming grain backlog in November: documents
The head of Canadian National (CN) offered to sit down with industry to reach a solution to the looming grain backlog in November, months before the situation reached a crisis point, iPolitics has learned.
Millions of tonnes of grain languished in bins and elevators across the prairies last winter due to a bumper crop and the impact of frigid temperatures on rail transport logistics. Grain companies, railways and government officials blamed each other for the months-long delays.
While most of the finger pointing has been directed at the railways, new documents released under Access to Information show CN President Claude Mongeau sent a letter dated November 11, 2013 to the head of the Western Grain Elevator Association, Wade Sobkowich, blasting him for “misleading rhetoric on such important matters.’”
But, in the same letter, Mongeau offers to sit down with the association “to discuss the challenges we all face to move this record crop” so long as the association agrees “to be more fact based.”
The letter was also emailed November 11 to both Transport Minister Lisa Raitt and Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz.
The letter came a month after the railroad issued a press release warning stakeholders that moving last fall’s record 76 million tonne crop would “clearly challenge the entire supply chain” and urging all stakeholders “to come together in order to maximize end-to-end throughput on a consistent basis.”
