Older Canadians struggling to find work are being forced to take on jobs traditionally reserved for students, says a new CIBC World Markets report.
A lack of higher paying work has pushed older workers into low-paying, part-time jobs, according to the report, released Thursday. At the same time, students are being displaced, as the jobless rate for those 15 to 18 has surpassed 20 per cent.
“Young adults, displaced older workers, or immigrants whose education and skills are not always fully rewarded in the job market have been pushed into low-wage work during what has been a fairly lacklustre economic recovery,” said CIBC’s chief economist Avery Shenfeld in a statement.
“The real story is that the job market has not been strong enough to generate higher quality employment for older workers.”
