From only an economic point of view, Stephen Harper is violating one of the central tenets of economics: 'Thou shall not sell off your capital and call it income'. Yet Canadian forests are clear-cut, mountains are reduced to gravel pits, rivers and oceans are fished to the brink of extinction, and oil and natural gas is being sucked from the earth as if the supplies will last forever. Stephen Harper is selling off our entire nation's natural capital, calling it 'income', AND he wants to sell off much, much more of it! The public better realize that Harper's Enron economics are leading us into a very bleak fiscal future indeed.
We have been told how the geological rape of our nation is good for us, and that governments heavily subsidize fossil fuel ...industries because they will provide cheap energy and bolster economic growth. But, let me ask you, have your energy bills got any cheaper? Has "economic growth" been realized? Heck no! In fact the exact opposite is taking place.
The subsidies have only translated into larger profits for corporations who couldn't care bloody less about the general public or the environment. The government administers the policies, compiles only the stats it wants, and then fraudulently touts their effectiveness based on short term growth in employment and GDP.
The reality is that these insane policies are just harmful to our health as they are to our economy and the future prosperity of Canada. The employment and growth being generated by the current mass extraction of Canadian non-renewable resources is actually only a few piddly jobs, and they will only last for as long as the resources last, or until taxpayers can no longer afford to pay for it.
This mass sell off of non-renewable Canadian natural resources is not an 'investment' in a bright future, it is at best a cheap economic band-aid that is doomed to fail. Stripping Canada of its resources to feed foreign industries and military powers is socially suicidal, politically putrid, economically short-sighted, fiscally irresponsible, environmentally disastrous, and is nothing short of traitorous acts against the most beautiful nation on Earth.
