The Sun is nothing more than a rag for the ill informed

“Believe me I can’t make this stuff up” is a strange sentence to include in a newspaper column. Unless, of course, it is made up of entirely fictional information, like the recent article from Toronto Sun editorialist Sue-Ann Levy about asylum-seekers living at the Radisson Hotel Toronto East.

THE MEDIA HOLDS THE POWERFUL ACCOUNTABLE. THE TORONTO SUN PUNISHES THE POWERLESS

For those of you who haven’t read the piece in question, Levy’s column used TripAdvisor reviews to describe the “disgusting” state of the hotel where the federal government is housing some asylum seekers. Levy re-published these anonymous and unverified reviews in a Toronto Sun, including one that reported goats were being slaughtered in the bathrooms.
Right-wing media went wild. Her column was picked-up by InfoWars, The Rebel and other far-right outlets. Homegrown white nationalist and mayoral candidate Faith Goldy held a press conference at the Radisson saying she’d kick the asylum seekers out of Canada. Someone even tried to set fire to the hotel, though police have yet to reveal a motive for the crime.
A Buzzfeed story put the rumours to rest. The reviews were fake. Levy used them without quoting a single person, fact-checking the story, or contacting the hotel.
