The Conservatives in 2014 — tired, angry and out of tricks
What’s the bare minimum a party has to stand for in order to win an election? If there’s a single question guiding Conservative strategy ahead of the next election, that one just might be it.
The Conservatives have made a habit lately of spending more time and energy attacking rivals than fine-tuning their own policy ideas. It’s an approach that might be forgivable in an inexperienced opposition party — but for a party that’s governed for the past eight years, it’s bewildering.
The latest examples come straight from the sleazier chapters in the Republican party playbook. Twice in the last three months, Conservatives have sent individuals into Liberal events in the hopes of deliberately instigating missteps — while secretly recording the whole thing for release later.
