Bullying plan may be too late for some but it is finally announced

I was sort of impressed with today's Conservative announcement to make our youth understand the consequences of bullying. I was equally impressed with their taking the advice of the opposition and going to the "Route Cause" although they are not taking the battle against bigotry directly to the "source", their party and the parents of Canadian youth.

It is however a start, if they are truly serious and intend to make this plan a long term commitment then I can see it helping. I was not impressed with a paltry 250,000 dollars in funding for this program to train 2400 students as mentors, that works out to little more than 100 dollars per student, hardly enough to be considered a program but more of political posturing to promote the Conservative Party.

The Canadian Red Cross's Stand Up to Bullying and Discrimination in Canadian Communities project will get $250,000 in funding from Heritage Canada's Youth Take Charge program, Moore said.

About 2,400 young people, ages 13 to 17, will be trained during the first part of the program to deliver workshops, presentations and other special events about bullying and cyberbullying.

"In the second part [of the program], three youth-led forums in the Atlantic region, Ontario and British Columbia will empower 150 Canadian youth to take action against bullying and discrimination in their communities," according to a news release.

The program should be directed at all levels from kindergarten to adults and not just for those in their teens since you may be able to make a teen aware but, can you make them understand? It is interesting to note that the Harper government is targeting BC, Ontario and the Atlantic region while ignoring the rest of Canada in part 2 of their program.

Before educating our youth they must educate their own party members on the influence that their homophobia has had on our children. Again, attack the "Route Cause", years of anti gay rhetoric by the party has taken it's toll and influenced the bullies of Canada.
