It’s Movember – the month to grow a mustache and raise funds for prostate cancer.
Movember takes place every November and is an annual charity initiative responsible for raising funds, awareness and support of men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and male mental health. In spirit of the men’s charity, men grow moustaches all month and call the initiative “Movember.”
Movember is the world’s largest men’s health movement and the largest non-government funder of prostate cancer globally, according to Movember.com, the leading organization behind the initiative.
The idea of Movember began in 2003 with two friends growing a moustache for the month of November. After recruiting 30 friends, the initiative grew and has continued to grow each year.
Awareness continues to grow significantly each year.
Official campaigns will be held in 21 countries across five continents in 2012 to celebrate and support Movember.
Funds raised during Movember, will go toward prostate cancer research and men’s health
Globally, there have been 854,288 participants to date, 245,000 of which are from Canada, according to the Movember website. In the past ten years, $125.7 million has been raised globally, $42 million of which have been generated from Canada.
One in seven men in Canada will develop prostate cancer, according to Movember statistics. This year alone, 26,500 new cases will develop in Canada alone. About 4,000 Canadian men die of prostate cancer each year.
It’s important men keep good health and regular checkups with their doctor to reduce their risk of developing prostate cancer.
