I've seen some posts questioning the appropriateness of Canadians commenting on what is going on in the US.
Here's the thing. When I turn on my computer and see people being killed because of systemic and institutional racism - when I see the life leave a body on my computer screen - I am not just some innocent bystander any more. I have a stake in this.
America is supposed to be the gold standard of democracy. And maybe it once was, but that time has long passed. None of your problems are going to end until you fundamentally fix your democracy and your institutions to reflect the world as it is today, and not how it was a couple hundred years ago.
Your country is going to change, one way or another. You can prove to the world that your rhetoric has been true and do so with intention and with an attempt to limit violence, or you can do it through civil war. Your other options are quickly disappearing.
The best way forward is to empower your citizens and re-enfranchise them. Fix your constitution. Get rid of the 2nd amendment. Get rid of the electoral college. Stop electing positions for which actual expertise is required (judges, law enforcement, city clerks, etc.). Reduce your military spending. Focus on your own problems, and stop trying to police the world. Quite frankly, the rest of the world sees how you police yourselves, and we're not interested in that particular export.
You are nearing the end of this history book, America. The question you need to ask yourselves is whether there is going to be a sequel, or if the next book will be about how it all fell apart. It really is up to you.
