Lac Megantic... Perspective

July 9, 2013 at 10:30pm
Here are the last three locals I've spoken to. No camera, no microphone, no notepad -- not even a name. I've just been passing on condolences tonight.

A woman closing the door of her shop:

She lost her oldest sister. She's the youngest of 11 children, and the middle child was killed. The family is devestated. I had to change the subject before both of us teared up too much.

A guy sitting in a small park:

He has been living at the shelter, because he's not allowed home. He lost several friends. When the explosion happened, he was driving to Montreal, but came back. He used to fight forest fires so he offered to help. He spent the entire day and next night helping keep the pumps working. Before leaving he filled in for a couple of hours directing traffic -- to give someone else a break.

The cashier at Walmart:

She and her family moved to Lac Megantic from Bosnia. She says she's reliving the war, losing friends again. She cried as I shook her hand and she moved on to the next person in line.

Did you have a bad day?  Me too. I'm going to move on.
