As a great grandfather, grandfather and father my heart bleeds for those who lost a child in Newtown. I cannot fathom the depth of their despair. Love and Peace to all.
That being said, on my Facebook page I laid a portion of blame on the media and received some dissenting views from my cousin who happens to be a Global reporter. Let me clarify where I am coming from and I speak from past experience.
911 could have been avoided or at the least anticipated. The media, American, could have spent less time analysing and disseminating the possibilities of the 1993 bombing of The World Trade Center by Kalhed Sheikh Mohammed and his co-conspirators including Ramzi Yousef, Mahmud Abouhalima, Mohammad Salameh, Nidal A. Ayyad, Abdul Rahman Yasin and Ahmad Ajaj. After their failed attempt the media spent days breaking down their actions and bringing in so called experts, one of whom was a structural engineer, who sat on National TV and broke down the structure explaining that blowing up the building from the parking garage was impossible due to the thickness of concrete and re-bar.
This expert went on to explain that even the use of an aircraft, such as a Cessna, flying into the tower would not bring the structure down...... What did Al Quaida learn from this?....Uhhhh so what if we flew a fully loaded and fueled 737 into the tower.... say about twenty stories down and the aircraft knocked out columns and the ensuing fire created sufficient heat to weaken the remaining support columns? We now know the answer to that question. Oh geez! the towers imploded.
I watched CTV today as they had a so called expert who went on to descibe ways and means of entering a school should one desire to do so...... Thanks CTV.
This young man in Newtown had issues that we will only learn as time goes by.
Is this an issue of "The Right to Bear Arms" ? I don't believe so. From preliminary media reporting it appears that his mother was the owner of the weapons. In my opinion this becomes a question of access and a failure to prevent access.
The other issue, and I don't know if it is fact, is that he wore a bullet proof vest. If he did, and if he or his mother purchased a vest then questions should have been raised as to why they required a bullet proof vest. Is there a psychological problem here that needs to be dealt with? Do they have an intent to go on a rampage?
While I am not a gun advocate I believe Canada has found a happy medium, restrict access, control legal handguns and allow the carrying of long guns during the designated season provided the carrier has the proper papers.
I don't believe in arming "Joe Average" who has no training in the dissemination of the situation at hand and may well kill an innocent ally when confronted by a shooter.
Jane Creba is a good example about what happens when two factions fire indiscriminately.
