Donald Trump, who said 37 false things on Monday, calls fact checkers ‘scum’

The Republican presidential candidate has spent much of the campaign bashing the media. On Tuesday, during a frequently dishonest speech at an airport in Sanford, Fla., he singled out a specific group of journalists as “crooked as hell.”
WASHINGTON—Donald Trump falsely accused his opponent of debate cheating and falsely alleged voting fraud and falsely described hacked emails and falsely recited polling data.
Then he attacked the people who point out his false claims.
The Republican presidential candidate has spent much of the campaign bashing the media. On Tuesday, during a frequently dishonest speech at an airport in Sanford, Fla., he singled out a specific group of journalists as “crooked as hell”: fact-checkers.
“These fact-checkers, they’ll check facts with me and I’m like, like, 99-per-cent right, and they’ll say, ‘And therefore he lied,’ ” he said. He concluded: “Oh boy, these people are bad. What a group of people we have. What a group of dishonest scum we have, I’m telling you.”
Trump’s serial untruthfulness has spawned a boom in election fact-checking. Attempting to capture the unprecedented frequency of his inaccuracy, we of the Star have produced a near-daily list of Trump falsehoods since mid-September.
On Monday, the day before his brief rant, we counted 37 false claims from him. That tied the record he set at the third and final presidential debate, which he claimed every poll showed him winning, which was, of course, not at all true.
There are grains of truth in some of his false claims. Contrary to his suggestion, though, most are flat wrong.

Donald Trump: "Hillary is a great friend of mine" (2008)

London Review Book

Who Won’t Be Voting for Trump

Eliot Weinberger

African Americans
Trump is currently polling at 0-1 per cent among African Americans. (In some districts, they couldn’t find a single supporter.) However, Trump has stated that when he runs for his second term as president, ‘I guarantee you that I will get over 95 per cent of the African American vote. I promise you. Because I will produce.’
Women
Trump: ‘There’s nothing I love more than women, but they’re really a lot different than portrayed. They are far worse than men, far more aggressive, and boy, can they be smart!’
The Modest
Interviewer: ‘Who are you talking to consistently – since we have some dire foreign policy issues percolating around the world right now – who are you consulting with consistently so that you’re ready on day one?’ Trump: ‘I’m speaking with myself, number one, because I have a very good brain, and I’ve said a lot of things.’
Peace Lovers
Trump: ‘I’m good at war. I’ve had a lot of wars of my own. I’m really good at war. I love war in a certain way. But only when we win.’
Mexican Americans
Trump: ‘Our leaders are stupid, our politicians are stupid, and the Mexican government is much smarter, much sharper, much more cunning, and they send the bad ones over because they don’t want to pay for them, they don’t want to take care of them. Why should they, when the stupid leaders of the United States will do it for them? And that’s what’s happening, whether you like it or not.’ ‘They’re forcing people into our country … And they are drug dealers and they are criminals of all kinds. We are taking Mexico’s problems.’

CETA has bigger problems than not-so-'tiny'-after-all Wallonia

The Council of Canadians is exultant about the potential demise of a Canada/EU trade agreement.
"Democracy has prevailed and the agenda to boost corporate rights is in tatters," says Maude Barlow, the Council's national chairperson. "This isn't about internal Belgian politics. Millions of people across Europe and Canada have rejected this deal, including many Members of European Parliament, unions, environmental groups and farmers."
Green Party leader Elizabeth May is almost as pleased.
"I applaud the Wallonian regional parliament for standing firmly against this bad deal. In its current form, [the agreement] will increase pharmaceutical costs and hurt farmers, manufacturing sectors, and Canadian sovereignty."
The Canadian Chamber of Commerce is unhappy, to put it mildly. It believes the collapse of talks between Canada and the EU represents a "serious set-back for efforts to restore economic growth."
"It would be hard to find two partners that are better-suited to building an economic alliance, so it's incredibly disappointing to see the agreement fall short of the finish line by a few inches," says a chagrined Perrin Beatty, the Chamber's CEO.
The Official Opposition Conservatives are also, officially, disappointed.
But their tears seem, perhaps, a bit crocodilian.

A fear of too much corporate power....

5 Reasons Belgium's Walloons Blocked Free Trade With Canada

OTTAWA — The 3.5-million French-speaking Walloons of Belgium are standing in the way of the seven years of negotiations that led to the wide-ranging free trade deal between the 35 million people of Canada and the 500 million living in the European Union. The Wallonia region has an effective veto over the deal because Belgium's constitution gives them that power over the country's national government.
Here are five things at the heart of Wallonia's discontent over the deal, known as CETA:

FOLLOW THE MONEY, PART 1 — THE WESTON FAMILY

You’ve seen him in television ads hyping President’s Choice dessert ideas, naming fake supermarkets after enthusiastic customers, sitting down with moms around the kitchen table and talking to President’s Choice farmers on their hormone-free farms.
He’s Galen Weston Jr., executive chairman of Loblaw Companies Ltd. And while he, or his media handlers, hone the image of Galen among the common folk—top shirt button always undone—the reality is that he’s next in line to head Canada’s second-wealthiest family, with a 2014 net worth of $10.4 billion, a 26-percent increase over 2013.
The Weston family does many good things with its vast fortune, such as fund health research, university scholarships and private land conservation. At the same time, though, it has probably done more to undermine public education in Canada than anyone else. The family foundation has donated nearly $22 million to the Fraser Institute for its programs to destabilize the public education system and promote school choice and vouchers.
Milton Friedman was the inspiration for these programs. His 1995 Washington Post editorial said it all: “Public schools: Make them private.” And that’s what the Weston-Fraser partnership has set out to do.

Canada West Foundation

CANADA WEST FOUNDATION REWRITE HISTORY: THINK TANK TRACKER

Canada West Foundation senior economist Michael Holden wants us to believe his think tank is the only one “dedicated to being the objective, non-partisan voice for issues of vital concern to Western Canadians.” This is laughable.
For the record:
  • The Canada West Foundation is where the Reform Party got started.
  • The Canada West Foundation is backed by Western Canada’s biggest business tycoons.
  • The Canada West Foundation is pro-market, anti-union, anti-environmental and anti-social justice.
If it’s the voice for Western Canadians, it’s a small group of Western Canadians. The West’s one percenters perhaps?
In an op-ed published in the Province, Holden makes the case that ideological biases are wrecking public-policy debates. I agree and thought he was going after the Fraser Institute because there’s no question the Fraser’s market fundamentalists, with their ideological blinkers, have distorted many public-policy debates.
But no, it was those nasty environmentalists who are resorting to “fear, ideology, intentional misrepresentation and pejorative language” to win the day and prevent further development of the Columbia Icefields in Jasper National Park.

10 Pieces Of Wisdom & Quotes From Native American Elders

Prior to the arrival of Europeans in America, there were estimated to be 1.2 to 12 million Native Americans living in the Americas. That population was quickly dwindled to 250,000 via disease, suicide, genocide, slavery, and mass murder. This was an incredibly great tragedy and may be on of the most terrible things to ever happen to any group of people in the history of our planet. However, almost 0 attention is given to this tragedy. One has to ask, why?
In this tragedy, not only lives were lost, but almost all Native American traditions, spirituality, and customs were killed along with the people. Could this have been a reason for the genocide? They were in tune with Mother Nature and are often called the Keepers of the Earth. They wanted to “walk lightly upon the Earth and live in balance and harmony.” Perhaps if more Native Americans were alive today, our planet wouldn’t be facing so much turmoil. Everyone can benefit from adopting so of the ancient spiritual teachings of the Native American elders.

Wednesday's Ride - Mountain Trike - Off Road Wheelchair

A post on FB by our daughter

Wow. You know American politics are spoken about a lot in Canada (at home, school and media) when... Your 8 and 9 year old are concerned that Donald Trump will become the leader of Canada and they are afraid of the wall and cheer on Clinton. And they love watching satire / commentary shows like RMR and 22 Min. Their giggles are contagious.

Their concern has nothing to do with my disdain for Trump it must be the Canadian media coverage. It amazes me that they hear and to some degree understand the real danger that he poses.

He is a loose canon that cannot control his emotions as he spouts lie after lie and misleading information.

Wasting taxpayers money on all fronts

Tory leadership hopeful Andrew Scheer top spender among candidates to lead party: Database

OTTAWA — Andrew Scheer led the way among Conservative leadership candidates when it came to spending the most to run his MP office in the first half of the year.
Scheer, a Saskatchewan MP and former Speaker of the House of Commons, spent nearly $263,000 on travel for himself and his family, salaries for employees, accommodation and per diems while in Ottawa, office leases in his riding, and other expenses.
The average for all MPs from Saskatchewan was $221,860 and the average for Conservative MPs was $218,775. Scheer’s spending was 12th highest among all 338 MPs, according to an analysis of a database of MP spending in the first half of 2016.
The database was built by the National Post based on information published by the Board of Internal Economy, the committee of MPs that is responsible for the administration of the House of Commons.
Scheer was travelling Friday and could not reached for comment.
For all of the reporting period, though, he would have been his party’s House Leader, a position which would have required him to be in Ottawa more often than most other MPs.
While in Ottawa, MPs can claim ‘travel expenses’ and Scheer led all nine declared and potential leadership candidates that are current members of the Conservative caucus when it came to per diem claims. Scheer’s claim of $6,931.58 for per diems from January 1 to June 30 was 18th highest among all 388 MPs.
Scheer, 37, has five children and he was the only one of the nine declared and potential candidates to file expenses for “Travel-Dependants.” The bill for his children’s travel was $7,396.88, sixth highest among all 338 MPs in this expense category.
Scheer also claimed $3,581.31 for his “designated traveller”, who, in this case, was his wife Jill. That was 3rd highest among the nine candidates in caucus and 83rd highest among all MPs.
But Scheer was second to another Saskatchewan MP running to replace Stephen Harper, Brad Trost, for expenses related to “designated traveller.” Trost claimed $12,197.66 in the first six months of the year, 14th highest among all 338 MPs.

Two Stories BOTH TRUE - and worth reading!!!!

     STORY NUMBER  ONE
Many years ago, Al Capone virtually owned Chicago . Capone wasn't famous for anything heroic. He was notorious for enmeshing the windy city in everything from bootlegged booze and prostitution to murder.

Capone had a lawyer nicknamed "Easy Eddie." He was Capone's lawyer for a good reason. Eddie was very good! In fact, Eddie's skill at legal maneuvering kept Big Al out of jail for a long time.

To show his appreciation, Capone paid him very well. Not only was the money big, but Eddie got special dividends, as well. For instance, he and his family occupied a fenced-in mansion with live-in help and all of the conveniences of  the day. The estate was so large that it filled an entire Chicago City block.

Eddie lived the high life of the Chicago mob and gave little consideration to the atrocity that went on around him.

Eddie did have one soft spot, however. He had a son that he loved dearly. Eddie saw to it that his young son had clothes, cars, and a good education. Nothing was withheld.  Price was no object.

And, despite his involvement with organized crime, Eddie even tried to teach him right from wrong.  Eddie wanted his son to be a better man than he was.

Yet, with all his  wealth and influence, there were two things he couldn't give his son; he couldn't pass on a good name or a good example.

One day, Easy Eddie reached a difficult decision. Easy Eddie wanted to rectify wrongs he had done.

He decided he would go to the authorities and tell the truth about Al "Scarface" Capone, clean up his tarnished name, and offer his son some semblance of integrity. To do this, he would have to testify against The Mob, and he knew that the cost would be great.     So, he testified.

Within the year, Easy Eddie's life ended in a blaze of gunfire on a  lonely Chicago Street ..  But in his eyes, he had given his son the greatest gift he had to offer, at the greatest price he could ever pay. Police removed from his pockets a rosary, a crucifix, a religious medallion, and a poem clipped from a magazine.

        The poem read:

"The clock of life is wound but once, and no man has the power to tell just when the hands will stop, at late or early hour.  Now is the only time you own. Live, love, toil with a will. Place no faith in time. For the clock may soon be still."

        STORY NUMBER  TWO

World War II produced many heroes. One such man was Lieutenant Commander Butch O'Hare.

He was a fighter pilot assigned to the aircraft carrier Lexington in the South Pacific.

One day his entire squadron was sent on a mission. After he was airborne, he  looked at his fuel gauge and realized that someone had forgotten to top off his fuel tank.

He would not have enough fuel to complete his mission and get back to his  ship.

His flight leader told him to return to the carrier. Reluctantly, he dropped out of formation and headed back to the fleet.

As he was returning to the mother ship, he saw something that turned his blood cold; a squadron of Japanese aircraft was speeding its way toward the American fleet.

The American fighters were gone on a sortie, and the fleet was all but defenseless. He couldn't reach his squadron and bring them back in time to save the fleet. Nor could he warn the fleet of the approaching danger. There was only one thing to do. He must somehow divert them from the  fleet.

Laying aside all thoughts of personal safety, he dove into the formation of Japanese planes. Wing-mounted 50 caliber's blazed as he charged in, attacking one surprised enemy plane and then another. Butch wove in and out of the now broken formation and fired at as many planes as possible until all his ammunition was finally spent.

Undaunted, he continued the assault. He dove at the planes, trying to  clip a wing or tail in hopes of damaging as many enemy planes as possible, rendering them unfit to fly.

Finally, the exasperated Japanese squadron took off in another  direction.

Deeply relieved, Butch O'Hare and his tattered fighter limped back to the carrier.

Upon arrival, he reported in and related the event surrounding his return. The film from the gun-camera mounted on his plane told the tale. It showed the extent of Butch's daring attempt to protect his fleet.  He had, in fact, destroyed five enemy aircraft.
This took place on February 20, 1942 , and for that action Butch became the Navy's first Ace of W.W.II, and the first Naval Aviator to win the Congressional Medal of Honor.

A year later Butch was killed in aerial combat at the age of 29. His home town would  not allow the memory of this WW II hero to fade, and today, O'Hare Airport in Chicago is named in tribute to the courage of this great man.

So, the next time you find yourself at O'Hare International, give some thought to visiting Butch's memorial displaying his statue and his Medal of Honor. It's located between Terminals 1 and 2.

SO WHAT DO THESE TWO STORIES HAVE TO DO WITH EACH OTHER?

Butch O'Hare was "Easy Eddie's" son.

Conservatives: Politics of division and hate - NOT in my Canada

  • Send by Mail

IT’S TIME TO STAND UP TO CONSERVATIVES WHO STIR UP ANGER AND HATE

Ignoring Steven Blaney and Kellie Leitch, Tory leadership candidates who are stoking fear about immigration and lost ‘Canadian values,’ won’t make them go away

First it was Kellie Leitch with her plan for screening of potential immigrants for “anti-Canadian values.”
Now comes Steven Blaney with his proposals to test all citizenship applicants to preserve “Canadian identity” and to ban federal employees from wearing niqab face coverings at work.
“It is critical that we make sure that new Canadians fully endorse the Canadian principles that are the foundations of our society,” Blaney, a Quebec MP, said this week as he formally entered the federal Conservative leadership race.
Leitch and Blaney are among a dozen or so possible candidates seeking the leadership, but their outspoken comments on immigration and Canadian “values,” “principles” and “identity” have gained them far more news coverage than any of their competitors.
Cynical politics on their part or do they reflect a growing trend in Canada?

Beautiful English

I called an old school friend and asked what was he doing. He replied that he is working on "Aqua-thermal  treatment of ceramics, aluminium and steel under a constrained environment".
I was impressed......

On further enquiring I learnt that he was washing dishes with hot water.....under his wife's supervision.
