It's time for the Conservatives to change the air in their heads

Last week I wrote about how the Minister of State for Democratic Reform Tim Uppal was about to introduce a bill in the house intended to reform Canada's election process. Then I wrote about how the Conservatives are cutting the budget for "Elections Canada" by 8%.

Tim Uppal's bill, in typical Conservative fashion, was "figments of their imagination" and was written without consultation with Elections Canada, the one body of the government with true experience. Now it seems that the Conservatives have seen the light ever since an independent report was commissioned by Elections Canada.

Why would the Minister of State for Democratic Reform not seek out, and commission, an independent report before writing a bill? Because they are arrogant and believe they are masters of all things legal and it is only their opinion that matters..... well guess what?

Now Tim Uppal, in light of the independent study commissioned by Elections Canada, has pulled the bill. Stephen Harper has announced that they will look at implementing the studies recommendations.

The Minister of State for Democratic Reform Tim Uppal abruptly withdrew a bill on electoral reform he was about to table in Parliament last week. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said a new bill would incorporate changes specifically in response to Elections Canada's independent report on procedural errors.

Really! And if you believe that, then I have some overpriced aircraft and ships to sell you, neither of which underwent a prior independent study.

Harper on Elections Canada.....

-From Aug. 28, 2003 - page 3 - on Elections Canada and then-Chief Electoral Officer Jean-Pierre Kingsley:
'"The jackasses at Elections Canada are out of control." Please excuse my language, but when I learned Elections Canada's bureaucrats have pressed charges against a Canadian citizen, I just blew my cool. That is the exact language I used ... This is not the first attack on freedom by Elections Canada. Its heavy-handed chief, Jean-Pierre Kingsley, has been an advocate of the most minute of controls and regulations - and stiff punishments - on every aspect of "free" elections.' 08/2001

-From Aug. 28, 2003 - page 3 - on Elections Canada and then-Chief Electoral Officer Jean-Pierre Kingsley:
"Simply put, Kingsley is a dangerous man. It is appropriate that journalists have dubbed him Canada's 'Chief Electoral Ideologue' and 'Chief Electoral Nanny.'" 08/2001

They have proven time and again that they have less knowledge and ability to run Canada than a school teacher would have.
