Male Chauvinistic Pigs

Back in the 80's (that's the 1980's for you dead heads) I was an assistant coach with my boys football team in Riverview New Brunswick. We had two females playing on the team, while our rivals in the West end had one. It would seem to me that Atlantic Canada was not only ahead of it's time but far more open to the abilities of women to compete in an otherwise male dominated sport.

Interestingly there was never any question whether these girls were qualified to play. The only question was talent, and they had it. Our rivals, the Lions, had a female running back who out ran and out powered her competition yet off the field she was every bit a young woman. The same can be said for the two young ladies that played for us. The Lions went on to win the Provincial Championship that year.

At the beginning the boys were unsure if the girls could compete at their level so we suggested the boys attend an aerobics class, of course in those days the classes were 100% female. After one class the boys no longer questioned the stamina of the women.

Excerpt from Yahoo News

Like the rest of her Southampton (Va.) Academy teammates, Mina Johnson was supposed to be getting ready for a junior varsity football game on Thursday night against Lasker (N.C.) Northeast Academy. The 5-foot-2, 170-pound defensive stalwart may have been the first girl to play football for the academy, but when she got on the field, she was just one of the guys.

As the Tidewater News reported, Johnson recorded four sacks in a recent game against Rocky Mount, and was gaining a reputation in the league as a standout junior varsity player. It all seemed to be going right for the eighth-grader -- until she suddenly decided to sit out her team's most recent game against Northeast.

Why? It wasn't due to injury. Rather, Johnson decided not to play in the game after the opposition threatened to forfeit if Johnson was allowed to play. Apparently, Northeast had a problem with its boys playing football against a girl. So instead of making a fuss about the whole situation, Johnson sat on the sidelines for her team's 60-0 victory.
"There is nothing in the rule books for junior varsity football in North Carolina or Virginia that says a girl can't play," the teen's mother, Mona Johnson, told the Tidewater News. "No one is breaking any rules by allowing her to play."

I have always lived in absolute awe of women. Never in my life have I come home from work, washed the kitchen floor, made supper, bathed the kids and accommodated someone else desires .... I guess that makes me a chauvinistic pig as well..... damn I thought I was doing really well when I vacuumed the living room.
