Letters: Look hard at last 10 years
It’s absolutely amazing to me that anyone with a modicum of judgment can justify Stephen Harper’s behaviour in the past 10 years.
He’s misled Canadians, bullied his colleagues, appointed senators after promising to abolish the Senate, and prorogued parliament on the flimsiest of grounds, not once, but twice, to protect his position. He has abused his position long enough. And all in the name of the almighty dollar and/or his image of Canada. Have you noticed the shift from “the government of Canada” to “the Harper government”?
But who has benefitted from his economic measures? Not me, for sure. I’m a single retired woman on a pension. I don’t even register on his radar. Nor do abused and missing aboriginal women, veterans … Well, they register, but not in a good way. How many of the working poor are getting any breaks from Harper’s government?
And now, in desperation, he adds the politics of fear to his arsenal of hyperbole with the niqab issue. Meanwhile, he destroys Canada’s reputation around the world, ignores the bill of rights and the Constitution, and plays havoc with the environment. How much money will Harper supporters need to buy air that’s safe to breathe or water that’s safe to drink? No amount of balanced budget will provide a legacy for the next generation if we destroy the planet’s most important resources.
I appeal to all of you who love our country: Really look at the past 10 years and see what’s really been done to benefit all Canadians, and let’s show Harper the door!

Attack ads don’t need actors
For many weeks, the airwaves have been cluttered by that Conservative attack ad claiming Justin Trudeau is “just not ready.”
Why should we be swayed by that “just not ready” ad? Because the script was so well-written? Because the professional actors played their parts so convincingly? Because the director, stage hands, and lighting, sound and camera crews all did their jobs?
Those TV people would have been just as professional had they been selling dog food or ham sandwiches instead of Stephen Harper’s message.
Why didn’t Harper star in his own attack ad if he thinks his message is so convincing?
