Letter to the Editor, Toronto Star:

Certify the Senate, Editorial July 11
A perfectly fitting heading.
...
A Senate that is riddled with scandals has the audacity to propose training and certification for imams. This is nothing more than pandering to the base during an election year.

More than half of the occupants of this Senate were appointed by Stephen Harper while a spending scandal hangs over this very Senate accused of the sense of entitlement and sleaze normally associated with corrupt developing countries found expression in this chamber of sober second thought.

The recommendations by the Senate’s security and defence committee on anti-terrorism is focused on targeting one group, Muslims. What racist polemics.

More fear and anti-Muslim diatribe, which has become the hallmark of Harper’s policies, is now being helped by the Senate to strengthen his position in the caucus that is loaded with theo-cons.

It is shocking for all fair minded Canadians that the Senate has targeted Canada’s vulnerable Muslim population, leaving in shreds the country’s reputation as a liberal democracy where religious freedom is the bedrock for all human freedom. Where does the Harper-appointed Office of Religious Freedom stand?

The report’s credibility flies in the face of studies that point at the right-wing extremist threats as higher risks than terrorism by Muslims.

For years, Harperites have been playing crass and dangerous anti-Muslim politics and the coming elections would see the end of this regime and its sordid saga.
