Former privacy commissioner raises red flags on CSIS changes
As Western countries move to step up their intelligence efforts against the Islamic State’s organizational and recruiting capacities, Canada’s own effort may represent a threat to privacy rights, says the country’s former privacy watchdog.
“I am watching this extremely carefully and I urge Canadians to watch it extremely carefully,” cautioned former privacy commissioner Chantal Bernier.
“Because it is fertile ground for permanent legislation that could curtail human rights in a long-term fashion in response to short term circumscribed situations.”'
The proposed changes to the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) were hinted at by the prime minister weeks ago in the House amid debate on Canada’s role in Iraq and against the terror group Islamic State.
