A must-see 4 min. video - if you eat fish - Asian Catfish Farms
Even though I have been warned many times in the past about eating basa, catfish, pacific dory, any white fillets - it is still hard to remember this all the time.
Just last week we had a popular sauerkraut fish soup at our favourite Shangahinese restaurant, I will bet anything the white fish fillets in the soup came from these frozen imported variety. Must think more carefully in the future before we order in a restaurant from now on...
see this 4-min video, and be reminded before you order!
You should also know that most fish and chips fish sold are actually made from this same catfish... because the texture of meat is firm and color is white, and cost is cheap, most restaurants anywhere will use catfish for fish and chips... so buyers should really avoid catfish or "pacific Dory" (as this is also its more glamorous market name for same old catfish) ... better yet, if you must eat fish outside of your home, try to avoid plain fillet (as you then cannot really be sure what they serve you is really what they claim) but order (or buy) the whole fish.. that way, you can see what you will really be paying for...
I never knew that Basa was catfish. I never buy it as I don't like anything that comes from polluted waters in Vietnam or China or Bangladesh. Hi I bet most of the Asian markets and restaurants use these fish from that Mekong river! This may also the steamed white fish fillet they serve in many Chinese restaurant now i know what BASA fish is, often see it on menu in Asian restaurants. You can now cross catfish off your menu... Just look for the "Made in Vietnam label". Click to watch
