Michael Harris:
** Harper ended the national conversation during his decade of silence and autocracy. There were no full first ministers meetings during the Harper regime; through two terms, Brian Mulroney held fourteen of them. Harper never met with union leaders. Harper rarely spoke to reporters. He silenced scientists. He withheld information from Parliament. He ignored First Nations people. He sold weapons, and then the Canadian Wheat Board, to Saudi Arabia. He took the country to war at every opportunity. He badly damaged the relationship with the United Nations. Perhaps worst of all, he misused the power of his office to destroy a number of individuals who dared to question his half-truths and lies — from Linda Keen to Kevin Page.
There will be no future in Canada for the Conservative party until it faces up to that legacy, and until those who were part of the last government accept responsibility for it. And that means changing a lot of things that went badly wrong on Harper’s watch. A new leader from outside the current caucus would send a signal that the party realizes its failings run far deeper than “tone”.**
Do the Conservatives understand yet why they lost?
