From tackling climate change to adopting the Canada Food Guide, Conservative Party Leader Andrew Scheer is demonstrating an anti-science, anti-expertise mindset that’s deeply troubling from a would-be prime minister of a country dependent on knowledge-based innovation for growth and prosperity.
Scheer deservedly attracted wide criticism this month for his comments to a dairy producers’ convention in Saskatoon, where he said a government led by him would review the new food guide that he said was flawed and was developed without proper consultation.
While Scheer was adamant that the food guide’s recommendations on a healthy diet for Canadians need to “actually reflect what we know, what the science tells us,” he glossed over the fact that the guide was developed through an open and transparent process involving wider input from dieticians, doctors and other experts in nutrition.
Opinion: Scheer is ignoring science on issues of national importance
Scheer deservedly attracted wide criticism for his comments that a government led by him would review the new "flawed" food guide.
