Thursday's Ride - Labatt's Beer Delivery Truck

Premier "Bulldung" Ford the lying turd of Queens Park

We tried, but we couldn't find any economists willing to back up Ford's warning of a "carbon tax recession." The one study that his staff cite as evidence (this report by ) says no such thing.

Read the thread:

Then there's this from Robyn Gibbard:

I'm one of the authors of the Conference Board study cited by Ford's staff. At no point in our research paper do we say that the carbon tax could cause a recession. We specifically describe the overall economic impact as "small."

Tuesday's Ride - 1949 CHEVROLET TRUCK AND BUS PROMOTIONAL FILM "TRANSPORTATION UNLIMITED"...

Ford is the crisis

Chaos and invented crises — Doug Ford is borrowing from the Mike Harris tool box

The mayors and political leaders of the Toronto-centred region’s nearly 10 million people are much like the Toronto Maple Leafs: skilled, prominent, hyped and, fatally, lacking grit and fight.
So, expect them — the municipal politicians — to be steamrolled by a pugilistic Premier Doug Ford and his marauding provincial government looking to reduce a provincial deficit on the backs of local taxpayers.
Like Toronto Mayor John Tory before them, these leaders have already folded like a cheap suitcase in the face of provincial intent to meddle and mess up the way our communities are governed.
The municipal leaders have not been asking for this. The provincial bureaucracy has not issued any warnings or concern. The new government was not elected on a platform to fix identifiable problems. There is no study or data or report or discussion or consultation or white paper or recommendation or debate. There is only the facile mantra to reduce government and gain efficiencies.
Some seem to put great stock in the fact that well-regarded “advisers” Michael Fenn and Ken Seiling have been tapped to do a review and report by summer. But what exactly is their mandate? And their task is so designed to deliver private advice to the government, not a public report for wide consumption and review.
Some 82 cities and towns in the Golden Horseshoe are threatened — or, if you are deluded, on tap for great improvements. When was the last time a provincial government, unprompted, pursued municipal reforms that were designed to improve anything within municipal mandate?

Ford of the Lies: the sequel

Neil Before Zod
Ontario Has Become The Shitty Sequel to Lord Of The Flies: Ford Of The Lies
Was Mike Harris really that good that we needed a sequel?
Here is what I remember about the Mike Harris years. Mike Harris now boasts about cutting $400 million annually from colleges and universities, but fails to acknowledge that under his reign tuition fees increased by 60 per cent and student debt ballooned while professor-to-student ratios fell to last place in Canada. I saw my Tuition go from $1700 my first year to over $4000 my final year. While tuition increased, OSAP loan maximums stayed stagnant.
The summer before Mike Harris, I worked for the Ministry of Natural Resources in a summer job program that was canceled the year Mike Harris took office.
My courses went from being taught by professors/associate professors to teaching assistants. I saw the intramural sports programs I loved cut, with user fees making it financially restrictive to take part in. I saw food prices in the cafeteria nearly double, and a food bank being set up on Campus.
Some years I was lucky to get bursaries, but most years I was forced to work at least two part time jobs to be able to go to school. All this did was take away from my school experience, and give me a level of worry that no student should ever have to face. It also distracted me from achieving higher grades. Oh yes, it also left me with a crippling debt load when I was finished.
During this time, I was subject to no less than 3 school strikes from educators to support staffs. Municipal downloading saw my transit fees skyrocket. One summer when my OSAP grace period was cancelled, I recall being thrown out of a PC MPP’s office for loitering when I dared ask him for help.
I watched as friends were forced to leave school, and forced into poverty. I saw Indigenous People being killed for protesting at Ipperwash. I saw fellow Ontarians die as direct result of Mike Harris’ policies in Walkerton. I saw Kimberly Rogers commit suicide as direct result of the culture of distrust that permeated Ontario’s social services during the Mike Harris years.
Mike Harris left office in a fog of coroner and public inquests. People died because of Mike Harris. There is no hyperbole in that statement. There was an ingrained cruelty in the “Common Sense Revolution” and an ideological hatred of the poor, and of students. In other words, people who would never support their government or party.
Now history is repeating itself with Doug Ford. The same hatred of students and of teachers, the same hatred and cruelty towards the poor. Cuts to OSAP, and tuition grant programs that benefit low income Ontarians. I see a puffed up bully who is picking the low hanging fruit and disenfranchising Franco-Ontariens, and an entire section of Ontario’s population in the name of efficiencies.
Mike Harris radicalized me, and he is going to do the same to my children’s generation. I had never attended a protest or walked out of school or work until Mike Harris became Premier of Ontario. I once was detained at a student protest for the simple act of telling Mike Harris to his face what I thought of him, but not arrested. Mike Harris was Ontario’s Richard Nixon, and now Doug Ford gets to be my daughter’s Mike Harris. The cycle continues, only this time I will be at the protests with my daughter, I will walk out with her. I will not stand idly by while another Conservative government tries to steal the future of another generation of young Ontarians and while Andrew Scheer hopes to accomplish the same nationally.
You have fucked with the wrong parents, Doug. This time you will face a resistance that would have left Mike Harris in a fetal position crying.

Million dollar question

The danger of science denial | Michael Specter

No dumber Premier than Doug Ford

Every day Doug Ford sounds more and more like Donald Trump. No Premier has done more damage to his province in less time than he has And those who don't get it must be as dumb or as corrupt as he is.

"DRINKING & GOLF"

A man was walking down the street when he was accosted by a particularly dirty and shabby-looking homeless man who asked him for a couple of dollars for dinner.
The man took out his wallet, extracted ten dollars and asked, "If I give you this money, will you buy some beer with it instead of dinner?"
"No, I had to stop drinking years ago," the homeless man replied.
"Will you spend this on green fees at a golf course instead of food?" the man asked.
"Are you NUTS!" replied the homeless man. I haven't played golf in 20 years!"
"Well," said the man, "I'm not going to give you money. Instead, I'm going to take you home for a hot shower and a terrific dinner cooked by my wife."
The homeless man was astounded. "Won't your wife be furious with you for doing that?"
The man replied, "That's okay. It's important for her to see what a man looks like after he has given up drinking and golf."

No Trespassing!

Colorado Senator Obliterates Ted Cruz On Senate Floor

Colorado Senator Michael Bennet is by most accounts a pretty mild mannered guy.  Not today.  He unleashed on Ted Cruz, the Freedom Caucus and Donald Trump on the Senate floor after Cruz defended Donald Trump’s border wall. Bennet’s frustrations are most likely because Cruz lied about who started the shutdown and who would own it (Donald Trump.)  Instead Cruz said the Democrats shut down the government.

How did they do this?

... a fine example of Critical Path Analysis

I TOLD MY SON, "YOU WILL MARRY THE GIRL I CHOOSE."
HE SAID, "NO."

I TOLD HIM, "SHE IS BILL GATES' DAUGHTER."

HE SAID, "YES."

I CALLED BILL GATES AND SAID, "I WANT YOUR DAUGHTER TO MARRY MY SON."

BILL GATES SAID, "NO."

I TOLD BILL GATES, "MY SON IS THE CEO OF THE WORLD BANK."

BILL GATES SAID, "OK."

I CALLED THE PRESIDENT OF WORLD BANK AND ASKED HIM TO MAKE MY SON THE CEO.

HE SAID, "NO."

I TOLD HIM, "MY SON IS BILL GATES' SON-IN-LAW."

HE SAID, "OK.

AND THAT'S EXACTLY HOW POLITICS WORKS.

And thus began the practice of hiring dumb asses to work in influential positions of government.
The practice is unbroken to this date.

The Washington Redskins finally drop offensive name:

Dan Snyder, owner of the NFL Redskins, has announced that the team is dropping "Washington" from the team name, and it will henceforth be simply known as, "The Redskins."  It was reported that he finds the word "Washington" imparts a negative image of poor leadership, mismanagement, corruption, cheating, lying, and graft, and is not a fitting role model for young fans of football.

What are Catholic schools teaching these Satanic teens?

Teens Wearing MAGA Hats Taunt Native American at D.C. March

It began at the Lincoln Memorial late Friday afternoon.  At the end of the Indigenous Peoples March, a Native American man was singing and beating his drum.  Suddenly he found himself surrounded by a large group of mostly white teenagers wearing “Make America Great” hats.  What followed was painful to watch as a teen in his MAGA hat taunted the Native American, staring at him with a smirk.  It turns out the students were in Washington for another rally, the March for Life.  We’ve learned today that the group was from Covington Catholic High School in Park Hills Kentucky, near Cincinnati.  Covington is an all boys prep school.  From The New York Times:

“In a statement, the Diocese of Covington and Covington Catholic High School condemned the behavior by the students and extended their “deepest apologies” to the elder, as well as to Native Americans in general.”

Harper, Serial Abuser of Power: The Evidence Compiled

A full, updated list of 70 Harper government assaults on democracy and the law.

Stephen Harper and his Conservatives have racked up dozens of serious abuses of power since forming government in 2006. From scams to smears, monkey-wrenching opponents to intimidating public servants like an Orwellian gorilla, some offences are criminal, others just offend human decency.
Last week we published 59 examples in two parts, and asked our readers to suggest any we may have missed. Among the many suggestions we gratefully received, we concluded that 11 more meet the criteria for “abuses of power.” Today we compile all 70 items into one omnibus of abuse by the Stephen Harper government.
Thanks, once more, to friends of The Tyee who help with this list.
SECTION I. ABUSING PARLIAMENT: SABOTAGE, SCANDALS, CORRUPTION AND CONTEMPT
This section includes examples of willful misgoverning by the PM and his team, 31 times they have lied, flouted rules and stymied democracy to achieve political and ideological ends.
PMO Tied to Senate Hush Money Scandal
An RCMP affidavit reported widespread involvement by PMO staffers in a secret payment to Senator Mike Duffy to try and make a political problem go away. The Senate expenses scandal brought on allegations of a cover-up, a breach of the public trust, and a whitewashing of a Senate report. The PMO was found to have hand in the altering of a damning Deloitte audit.
Harper Found in Contempt of Parliament
For refusing to disclose information on the costing of programs to Parliament, which Parliament was entitled to receive, the Harper government became the first in Canadian history to be found in contempt of Parliament.
Against Court Order, Refusal to Share Budget Info
Even though it lost a court case and was ordered to comply, the Harper government nevertheless refused to share 170 times reasons and impacts for cuts with Canada’s independent budget watchdog, mocking Parliament’s right to control the public purse.
