Interesting read here about the ice breaking going on not to far from here. I've seen this thing operate on the St-Francis river just down stream from us. I live upstream about 7km from the villages St-Francois and Pierreville which are about7 km upstream from Lac St-pierre and the shipping channel. When the ice starts to flow from Drummondville to our location it jams in a few islands that I can see from my living room window. We see the water and ice rise anywhere from 0 to 15 ft or more in a matter of hours. The next step is when it pushes hard enough to break up and head down to the village. This is where the hovercraft comes in. They try to get the ice cracked below the villages before the big push. Over the last 40 years or so that we have been here, there has been maybe 3 - 4 times that the ice was not broken up downstream on time and has had devastating consequences for everyone in its path.
Thanks Ivan
