Far from being an unwelcome add-on, opposition critics — officially designated and otherwise — act as a crucial counterbalance to the government of the day, every day, whether by interrogating a minister during question period or perusing the fine print at committee.
They should brandish their critic titles with pride, knowing that they play an essential role in our democracy, while simultaneously making it clear to anyone watching that, if asked, they’d be only too happy to serve in a future ministry headed up by Andrew Scheer.
Scheer, it’s worth noting, hasn’t yet rebranded himself as “Shadow Prime Minister,” so here’s hoping the rest of his front-benchers take the hint and quietly return to the Canadian tradition of loudly and proudly self-identifying as “critics” rather than cloaking themselves in shadow.
