New Finance Minister Joe Oliver says investments aren’t conflict-of-interest concern
OTTAWA – New Finance Minister Joe Oliver is refusing to make public details of investments he and his wife have made, saying their assets are all in pooled funds over which they have no control.
In an ethics disclosure Oliver was required to make as an MP, he said he holds unspecified investments that are managed through an investment company.
He was the “sole owner of a private corporation which owns investment accounts,” he declared, while his wife had a “LIRA (locked-in retirement account) with TD Canada Trust composed of publicly traded securities.” Oliver reported receiving income from his investments.
Now that he is finance minister, Oliver will have more influence over Canadian equities markets than any other cabinet minister.
