What the hell is this fool smoking..... we have a dictatorship right now.... what the Conservative majority say in the house ..... the majority Conservative Senate rubber stamps.
There are no checks and balances now and an elected Senate would not guarantee the citizens of Canada that anything would change. Canada is, and always has been, divided on partisan views. The west has a very distinct dislike of the east, in particular Ontario and Quebec, an elected Senate would only mean the same bulldung we have in the House of Commons, or even worse, it could be the same circus we presently see in the US Congress. Political posturing and a total lack of co-operation between parties.

The only way to insure balance in the Senate is to have the Provinces and Territories "nominate" Senators with the Senators being vetted by an independent committee prior to their entering the Chamber. All Provinces and Territories would have an equal number of Senators nominated to represent their respective constituents.
Our MP's would continue to be elected in the same manner as now. Few if any are truly qualified and even fewer are competent, as the present government has proven, however the Senate would then be less partisan than the house and the Senators would be forced to work together to review, edit and send back bills to the House for reconsideration.
My opinion of this upstart Conservative party is based on the fact that they are made up of a quasi group of Reform and Alliance party cronies who lack little or no actual political experience. In the past we had the Progressive Conservatives, Liberals and the NDP all of whom were civil to each other in the House and in the news. They were politicians who earned their votes and respect by being professional and did not run slanderous ads with misleading statements to sway opinion away from a more competent candidate. They won with hard work and positive view of what Canada is.
Since Harper stacked the Senate we have not heard of any bills that had been properly studied and returned to the House because they required revisions. It appears that all have been rubber stamped.
