Canada no longer in top 10 of developed countries
Bob, thought you would find this interesting.
Can the (new look) liberals save the day? With Trudeau at the helm, perhaps but my money would have been with Graneau. The NDP still have to get their sea legs.
Cliff
This is not meant specifically as a political statement. Yet in terms of health, income and education, Canada was number one during most of the 1990's, under Jean Chretien's Liberals. But a 2013 report shows that under Stephen Harper's Conservatives, we have now dropped out of the top ten:

There is a sense permeating through the world that Canada just doesn’t have the stuff anymore. You know, that je ne sais quoi that gave us a bit of a strut on the international stage. That thing that allowed us to punch above our weight, point a righteous finger at sinners and have other countries take notice.
Interesting that Canada is on the decline under the Harper administration but not surprising to Canadians.
Sure, sitting as the 11th most advanced country in the world isn't the worst thing, but it is a far cry from just a few decades ago, when the index could have been called "The UN Which Countries are Almost as Awesome as Canada Ranking." As recently as six years ago, Canada was still flirting with a top five ranking. Last year, we were 10th.
Thanks Cliff..... when a government puts the emphasis on oil and mining and the importation of low cost migrants and not their people then something must suffer.... one of the biggest complaints for those graduating from university is that there are no jobs in their field
If Canadians are to make thoughtful choices it is incumbent upon everyone to ask candidates for some details.
ReplyDeleteI see the NDP has released some of theirs in advance of the next federal budget and it marks a starting point for the discussion...http://realthings.ndp.ca
