"Progressives are screaming that Trudeau can't be working for climate change bc he bought a pipeline. It's a slogan, a punchline, now: "BUT YOU BOUGHT A PIPELINE". So I wanted to know - what's the story there? Like really why the heck would he do that?
Turns out you have to go back to Harper's bad deal he made with China in 2014. And that this mess is friggin complicated so doesn't fit into a sound byte. The Cons didn’t want it to.
The shortest answer: Harper signed a secret deal - with the Chinese, in a Russian hotel room - which passed without a Parliament vote, and lasts until 2045. A FIPA which allows Chinese energy companies to challenge our laws that interfere with their 'right' to make $$$$$. So they can sue for all kinds of things - like say First Nations People protest. They can basically do whatever they want, and the secrecy built into it is astounding. Which is why the Libs seem to avoid questions about foreign policy.
China was promised a pipeline to get oil to their tankers. The Libs consulted with environmentalists, First Nations, and an anti-pipeline activist. The goal was to make it as safe as possible, use profits for green energy projects, and phase out oil/gas use. That's why they bought it. This checks out with their climate change platform - there is a lot about transitioning jobs, many ideas and funds for programs. They bought it to phase it out - it had to happen anyhow, so they wanted to control it.
It's all complicated bc Harper didn't want Canadians to be up in arms about it. I missed most of it, so I'll post some links to info I read last night. Most economists who commented on it said Harper made a bad deal, and some people say it's practically treason.
The article mentioned in the visual is a good place to start: https:// www.theguardian.com/ commentisfree/2018/may/31/ justin-trudeau-kinder-morga n-pipeline-china-did-he-fe ar-being-sued"
