Wednsday we travelled inland a bit and went to the Palo Verde river excursion. The place is in the middle of what seems like nowhere. We passed thru a town called Filadelphia that has a sugar factory surrounded by acres upon acres of cane and cantaloupe fields irrigated by water from a nearby river that fills when the tide is high. The salt water sinks and they draw the fresh water from the top and irrigate using canals and wooden locks. We had seen a similar system in Charleston S.C. on old plantations that grew rice way back when.
In the park you ride a boat along the river and observe the nature and widlife. The ride only happens around high tide which pushes inland and the water rises 12-14 ft. Plenty of howler and white face monkeys crocodiles and various bird species. About 200 yards on each side of the river you have jungle and right after that the cane fields. After the tour we had lunch of typical Costa Rican food cooked on real wood stove and oven in a little town called Ortega.
Thanks Ivan
