From Montreal City weblog (http://w5.montreal.com/mtlweblog/)

Two out of three police recruits are disqualified because of background checks – even people applying for private security jobs and doorman work are facing this kind of background grilling and elimination. Background checking sounds like a growing industry.

I wonder what some of the disqualifying criteria might be (aside from criminal records).

It would be interesting to know.

well, think of the type of person who would typically apply to become a police officer – low education, prone to violence, fetishizing of authority, etc. these would also be people who’d tend to have prior brushes with the law, domestic assaults, poor credit, poor social skills, and the rest. not a huge surprise that background checks weed a good portion of these out.

A good friend of mine was a police officer for over 20 years. His description of a good half of his fellow officers pretty closely matches David M’s above. High school bullies who wanted to continue bullying, sufferers of Short Man syndrome, people who are mad at the entire world etc. He did add that theese types do not often last long enough to become career officers. They tend to get in trouble early on and flame out

    Thanks Ivan
