At least 2,000 bureaucrats would lose their jobs under a Progressive Conservative vision to reform Ontario’s health-care system by closing agencies that distribute cash to hospitals and arrange care for patients.
Shutting the doors of Local Health Integration Networks and Community Care Access Centres would free as much as $800 million for front-line care, Tory Leader Tim Hudak said Monday in releasing a 15-page white paper.
“It will be controversial but we have to make changes,” Hudak said, pledging to have about 40 hospital “hubs” in communities across the province take over those functions.
“We’re going to enhance their ability to integrate care in the system,” he added, conceding hospitals would have to add staff to help patients navigate the health and home-care systems, eating into the cost savings.
Details have not been determined, prompting Health Minister Deb Matthews to dub the idea “poorly thought out” and warn that Hudak is planning to dismantle important oversight functions in the health-care system.

Tim Hudak is on to something.
Ontarians are worried. The Tory leader hears it everywhere he goes across the province:
Factories are closing, friends are jobless, families are nervous. Now he is tapping into that anxiety by addressing voters’ biggest single concern on the doorstep.
As Hudak announced in an op-ed article in the Toronto Star on Monday, he is planning a new “Million Jobs Act.” If he wins the next election — expect this plan to be front and centre — it will be the law of the land.
It is good timing. And great politics.
But bad economics.
His plan for 1 million jobs is a neat way to win 1 million votes. But not if it doesn’t add up.

To understand the plan, let’s look at the problem:
First, how many people are out of work? Too many.
Statistics Canada reported the unemployment rate jumped from 7.2 per cent to 7.9 per cent in Ontario last month. That trend is not our friend.
